We have proven our ability to develop detection dog programs from conceptual
idea to 100% pass on Government qualifying trials right through to
operationally field proven. We
have proven this when we were awarded 2 x world first detection dog programs
and we wrote and developed the training methodology and then chose and raised
the dogs and picked and trained the handlers to work and maintain these 2 dogs.
One of these dogs was a prototype to prove the technology
sound and the other has been field operational for over 5 years and recording
as successful field indication rate of over 98% correct positive that
has been verified by an independent laboratory. Whilst we were Chief Trainer
and Maintenance Training Consultants this program maintained this level of
success for 5 years.
Both of these dogs had to find chemical residues in levels of 1 part per
million and had to originally qualify by correctly passing 70 tests which both
dogs qualified at 100%. We have also trained drug detection dogs and cadaver
recovery dogs and another world first, which was a dog to locate a waxy
substance regurgitated by whales called ambergris. We can supply many references and testimonies to our detection dogs
level of work and past successes. We have hundreds of print media articles on
all of our work
Use of Detection Dogs in Residue Management Programs
The detection of organochlorine(OC) residues in beef exported to the USA in
1987 prompted the banning of the use of OCs and a national recall of OC
chemicals on farms. Meatworks monitoring has proved successful in detecting
cattle with OC residues , however, OC contamination is largely an enviromental
problem. Idenification of actual source of OC residues on farm has proved more
challenging.
To improve the efficiency of detecting OC contamination in the on-farm
enviroment. Craig A Murray has trained a residue detection dog. Norm Norm is a world first in the area of residue detection and is trained to seek
out a range of OCs in the soil, specifically dieldrin, aldrin, DDT and
its breakdown products, DDD and DDE. His detection level is to 1ppm
for each of the odours, however, he is capable of detecting lower levels. Norm
has been fully field operational since July 1999.
Residue detection dogs such as Norm provide an accurate and efficient screening
tool to
assist in the identification of site contaminated with OCs.Norm offers
advantages in savings in time and people resources, and reduced
numbers of soil tests required to accuratly pinpoint the contaminated site/s
